Is a 450GSM Hoodie Actually Warm Enough for Winter? A Straight Answer

Every hoodie claims to be heavy. Almost none say what they weigh. Here is the number that matters and what it actually buys you when it is 20 degrees outside.

GSM, in plain terms

GSM is grams per square meter - how much fabric is in the thing. A typical mall hoodie is 250 to 300GSM. Premium heavyweight starts around 400. The Melt Hoodie is 450GSM fleece, which puts it at the top end of what anyone calls a hoodie and into territory where it behaves more like a light jacket than a sweatshirt.

You feel it immediately. The fabric holds its shape instead of clinging, the shoulders sit where you put them, and the whole thing has weight in your hands before you even pull it on.

Warm enough for winter? Depends on the winter

Above 45F: This is a coat. Wear it as your outer layer and you will be too warm walking.

30 to 45F: The sweet spot. A tee underneath, the hoodie over it, nothing else. This is where a 450GSM piece earns its money and where thinner hoodies quit.

15 to 30F: Still your main layer, but put a shell over it for wind. Fleece stops cold air, not moving air. Layer it under a hard shell like the Tech Anorak and the combination handles a real Chicago or Toronto walk.

Below 15F: Nothing this thin is enough on its own, and any brand that tells you otherwise is selling. Insulated coat, hoodie underneath.

Why heavyweight fleece beats a thin hoodie plus more layers

Three thin layers trap less air than one dense one, and they bunch at the shoulders and elbows. A single heavy fleece keeps its loft where the cold actually gets in - across the chest and up the back of the neck. It also does not pill into a sad fuzzy mess by February, which is the real reason cheap hoodies do not survive a winter.

Wet cold vs dry cold

London, Seattle, Vancouver, Dublin - the temperature reads mild and the cold still gets through, because damp air pulls heat off you faster. A dense fleece helps here more than the thermometer suggests. Just do not treat it as rainwear; it is not waterproof and no honest brand claims fleece is.

What we will not tell you

We will not claim this replaces a parka in Minneapolis in January. It does not. What it does is cover the long shoulder season most people dress badly for - October through December, then February through April - where a real coat is too much and a normal hoodie is not enough.
